Frenkie De Jong ‘agrees to join Barcelona as Man City miss out on transfer target’

Ajax midfielder Frenkie De Jong has agreed to join Barcelona, according to reports in Spain.

Radio Catalunya say the in-demand Dutch midfielder has made his final decision and has informed both Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain he intends to head to the Nou Camp.

The Holland international has been wanted by almost all of Europe’s top clubs and the big-money trio emerged as the leading contenders for his signature.

But the 21-year-old has decided to become Barcelona’s third January signing, alongside Jason Murillo and Kevin-Prince Boateng.

He is set to travel to Spain to formally complete the deal, which could be worth up to £80million, on Wednesday.

It means Pep Guardiola has missed out on one of his top targets, viewed as a long-term replacement for Fernandinho.

Guardiola has recently admitted they have drawn up a shortlist to replace the ageing Brazilian, but De Jong’s move to Spain could force them to cross one name off the list and look elsewhere.
