Official: Barcelona sign Frenkie De Jong in £65million transfer from Ajax

Barcelona have completed the £65million transfer of Frenkie De Jong from Ajax.

The youngster will join the Catalan giants at the end of the season and has put pen to paper on a five-year deal.

Ajax will make an additional £9million from the transfer in variable bonuses.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu said: “With the arrival of Frenkie De Jong we add talent, youth and Barca style to our sporting project. We are convinced that he will be a key part of our team for years to come. Welcome, Frenkie!”

De Jong turned down European giants Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain to sign for Barcelona, where he will join the likes of Lionel Messi, Philippe Coutinho and Sergio Busquets.

The 21-year-old has become Barcelona’s third January signing, alongside Jason Murillo and Kevin-Prince Boateng.

He travelled to Spain to formally complete the deal on Wednesday.

The transfer means Pep Guardiola has missed out on one of his top targets, viewed as a long-term replacement for Fernandinho.

Guardiola has recently admitted they have drawn up a shortlist to replace the ageing Brazilian, but De Jong’s move to Spain could force them to cross one name off the list and look elsewhere.
