Here’s another transfer which is surely never going to happen, right…
According to German tabloid Bild, as reported by ESPN, Manchester United and Bayern Munich are currently considering a swap deal that could see Mario Gotze and Angel Di Maria heading in opposite directions.
Bild note that Man United are looking to get at least €50m for Di Maria, which would still be a loss on their investment after the Red Devils shelled out a club record £59.7m on the Argentine last summer.
Bayern, however, are reluctant to pay such a fee for Di Maria after his underwhelming season at Old Trafford last campaign, but the Germans are willing to mull over a swap deal involving Gotze instead.
Gotze’s agent Volker Struth earlier this week suggested his client is open to a move away from the Allianz Arena, when he claimed that Bayern manager Pep Guardiola has destroyed his client. He said:
Guardiola has destroyed Gotze. He feels like the coach doesn’t have faith in him and yet still he is asked to be decisive when he gets on the pitch.
I’m surprised that Guardiola didn’t use Gotze in important matches like the German Cup and Champions League semi-finals. He only plays in the easy games.
So could the deal happen? It seems very doubtful.
First off, when is the last time a high profile swap deal actually came to fruition? Moreover, with Di Maria picking up an injury in the Copa America final that looks likely to hinder his pre-season training, would Bayern really want to do this deal?
